This week episode of the iHeart Far South Coast podcast takes a closer look at one of our region’s youngest volunteers for National Volunteer Week.
We catch up with 14-year-old Moruya Surf Life Saving Club member, Zara Hall, who generously gives up her spare time to ensure water and beach safety in her community.
The Year 9 student at St Peter’s Anglican College in Broulee admits she’s never far from a beach.
“I just love helping out the community and being at the beach, and I’m really grateful to be involved,” Zara said.

She volunteers with the Moruya Surf Club performing regular patrols at Shelly Beach, she also helps out with flags coaching, board training for the little ones every Wednesday, and weekly Nippers sessions on a Sunday.
The young volunteer is also a part of the Same Wave program team in Moruya, helping people with a disability and those facing other challenges, enjoy the surf.

Zara was recently named the 2024 NSW Female Junior Surf Life Saver of the Year, something that hasn’t happened to someone on the Far South Coast since Michelle Bouvet from Tathra Surf Club back in 1993.
Zara is also a feirce competitor, in her favoured event, the Under 14’s Female Beach Flags; Zara won a Bronze Medal in the Country Surf Life Saving Championships in January, placed 5th at the State Surf Life Saving Age Championships in March before bringing home a Silver Medal at this year’s AUSTRALIAN Youth Surf Life Saving Championships on the Sunny Coast in April.
