Expansion of Aged Care services in Bombala

July 22, 2024 8:14 am in by

The Federal Government has announced $25 million for the Bombala Multi-Purpose Service to expand its aged care services.

Together with $15 million committed by the NSW Government in 2023, the funding will see the MPS in the south-east expand from 10 to 30 beds and meet the residential aged care needs of older Australians in Bombala and surrounding communities.

It’s expected a new building will be constructed at the back off the property as well as several staff accommodation units.

The Bombala community was hit hard in early 2022 with the closure of the Currawarna residential aged care service, forcing many residents to leave their community and seek alternative care options in distant townships.

The Federal and NSW Governments have been working in collaboration with a range of stakeholders to develop a long-term sustainable solution for the region.

The Government’s contribution to the Bombala MPS project is being delivered under the Aged Care Capital Assistance Program which aims to support providers in regional, rural and remote communities to undertake capital upgrades and expansions to improve access to quality aged care services outside of our major cities.

Member for Eden-Monaro, Kristy McBain said the funding is a major win for the Bombala community.

“This comes on top of the recent recommissioning of the former Currawarna service as Currawarna Assisted Living (CAL),” Ms McBain said.

“Following the closure of the Currawarna service in 2022, the tight knit Bombala community rallied around their seniors and led a fundraising drive that ultimately allowed CAL to re-open,” she said.

“When completed, the additional beds at the MPS will be able to meet the longer-term higher aged care needs of Bombala’s seniors.”
