People rescued after yacht fire off Batemans Bay

Marine Rescue have responded to a distress call from a yacht that caught fire about 17 miles (31km) southeast of Batemans Bay this morning.

The 40-foot yacht had two people onboard when the call for help was made just after 7.30am today (Thursday May 25).

Both people on board are reportedly safe and uninjured.

Marine Rescue dispatched one vessel from Batemans Bay and one from Tuross-Moruya which braved tough conditions to respond to the call.

A Marine Rescue spokesperons said it’s believed the fire on board the yacht was sparked by an electrical issue.

The distressed vessel followed rescue boat ‘Batemans Bay 20’ back to the Batemans Bay dock.

Marine Rescue NSW Inspector, Stuart Massey, said he was happy Marine Rescue was able to help.

“We received information from Marine Area Command at 7:40am, that there was a 40 foot yacht with two people on board approximately 17 miles southeast of Batemans Bay that had caught fire,” Inspector Massey said.

“We responded accordingly by dispatching two vessels.”
