Narooma’s family-friendly amenities are set to get a major a boost.
A $1.4 million playground proposal is currently sitting with Eurobodalla Shire Council.
Discovery Holiday Parks Narooma Beach, owned by the G’Day Group – at 7323 Princes Highway, have lodged plans for a playground at the holiday site.
It promises a giant slide, climbing tower, swing set, flying fox, and a rock climbing wall.
CEO of Discovery Holiday parks, Grant Wilkins told East Coast Radio, the investment is part of a larger $5 million commitment to the park since its acquisition a year ago.
“Rather than do a water park which we did in our Eden site last year, we thought, why don’t we do something really special and do a really large playground that hasn’t really been done in the region in terms of the scale of what we’re considering,” Mr Wilkins said.
“Featuring a giant slide and a climbing tower, the coastal themed playground will be a real point of difference for the park and a major drawcard for families, which will support the continued growth of Narooma’s visitor economy.”
“It’s got something for children under five right through to teenagers.”
In terms of if South Coast locals, who are not guests at the park, will be able to utilise the new playground, Wilkins confirmed they will but with conditions.
“Clearly during peak periods it will need to be exclusive use for guests of the park but when it’s not being used or it’s less busy, why wouldn’t you let the local community use those facilities free of charge,” Wilkins said.
“Another thing is about insurance and risk, so something we’ve done in other areas is getting people to sign a waver and get a wristband before they can use the playground, as we just want everyone using the park in the right way.”
Pending Eurobodalla Council approval, the new playground that would include an 11m long playground structure, 2.86m high swing set, 30m long flying fox and 6.7m high rock climbing wall, could open by Christmas.
“Development approvals are underway, owing to the size and scale of the playground, and we have been engaged in positive discussions with Council,” Wilkins said.
“We are confident we can have it open in time for our guests to enjoy over Christmas, so confident in fact we’ve already organised and ordered the equipment.”
“It’s not a controversial DA, it’s just a process.”
Documents lodged with council reveal the playground equipment will be built off site and shipped to the park.
“Our aim is to have it open for that peak summer period,” Wilkins said.
“We’re really excited about it and the community should be too.”
