The Narooma Surf Lifesaving Club would like to remind South Coast locals and visitors to swim between the flags this summer and to raise your hand if you get into trouble on the beach.
That’s exactly what happened on Saturday (December 3) when a Narooma local found herself in a bad situation after getting caught in a cross-shore current. She ended up in a rip north of the flags at Narooma Main Beach.
Young lifesaver and one of the surf club’s newest bronze members, Cooper Matters (pictured below), carried out the club’s first rescue of the season, identifying the woman was in trouble, before she raised her hand for help.
He paddled to her aid and along with the Narooma team was able to get her safely back to shore.
Coopers said the woman stayed calm throughout and wasn’t distressed, which he said is an important aspect to surviving a rip current.
“Even if you’re a strong swimmer, conditions can change within minutes,” Matters said.
