Merimbula’s Finn-Young wins Australian Open Title

Young Merimbula bowls star, Reese Finn-Young is over the moon after winning the Australian Open Under-18 Girls’ Singles Bowls event on the Gold Coast on Friday (June 23).

The titles were held over three days, with 16-year-old, Finn-Young, taking on 17-year-old, Amity Bickley from Victoria in the Grand Final.

The final provided an exciting rematch from Finn-Young’s Australian Junior Singles Final as she faced the same opponent in Bickley.

The match was live-streamed on the Bowls Australia Facebook page and many Merimbula locals as well as students at Lumen Christi Catholic College tuned in to see Finn-Young in action.

It was a composed Finn-Young who came away with a 21-15 shot win over Bickley.

“I played Amity at Broadbeach with the game taking around an hour and a half,” Finn-Young said.

“I was happy to come away with the win.”

It’s Finn-Young’s First Australian Open and second Australian Title.

“It was great to meet new people and see some of my friends again and I’ll definitely be coming back next year to defend my title,” she said.

Her local Bowling Club, Club Sapphire, in Merimbula had this message of support for Finn-Young.

“Congratulations Reese on winning the Australian Open girls under 18 singles title in a thrilling final – What a champion!”
