In A-League news, the Wellington Phoenix have signed left back Lucas Mauragis on season-loan from the Newcastle Jets, who signed the 20-year-old for two years.
The former Merimbula Grasshoppers junior will cross the ditch, for more opportunities on the field.
“I’m going out on loan to Wellington Phoenix for one season for the experience and the opportunity to develop myself as a player,” Mauragis said.
“I guess going overseas is a big one, adjusting to playing football over there and I’ve been promised an opportunity for game time,” he said.
“Developing as a player is something I really want, so I’m really excited to make the move over to Wellington.”
Mauragis who plays at left back and left wing, made his debut for the Jets at the end of the 2019/20 campaign and has made 23 appearances for Newcastle over the past two seasons, scoring twice.
He says there’s many people on the South Coast he could thank for helping him get to where he is, but there’s one standout.
“My dad, I wouldn’t be a footballer if it wasn’t for him,” Mauragis said.
“He’s the one that committed all those hours to take me to training,” he said.
“And he is the one that trained with me when I was at a young age in Merimbula, getting up every morning before school, so I can’t thank him enough.”
Mauragis grew up in Merimbula on the South Coast where he started playing with the Merimbula Grasshoppers at the age of five.
He joined the Far South Coast Representative side around the age of 12, and when he was 13 he wanted to take his football further and made the Tuggeranong United Squad, commuting twice a week from Merimbula.
After a successful season with Tuggeranong United Mauragis was picked up by the Canberra United academy and had to move to Canberra in order to further his football career.
His advice for South Coast youngsters who want to go to the next level is simple – work hard.
“Always find time to work on yourself as a footballer if you want to succeed.”
The Far South Coast junior will arrive in Wellington on Sunday ahead of the start of pre-season training on Monday.
He’ll wear the no. 12 shirt for the Phoenix.
