Man bailed after more than one year on remand

A Surfside man has been granted strict conditional bail to live under house arrest but up on the state’s mid north coast while he stands accused of possessing millions in illegally obtained bitcoin.

Jamie Lawrence Powrie is charged with dealing with property of the proceeds of crime equal to $5 million or more, failing to comply with a digital evidence access order and supplying prohibited drugs of indictable quantity.

In Batemans Bay Local Court yesterday afternoon Judge Doug Dick agreed to release the 39-year-old from South Coast Correctional Centre in Nowra after one year and two weeks on remand.

The court was told Powrie allegedly purchased the home he was arrested at in Surfside with cryptocurrency that was the proceeds of crime.

Jamie Lawrence Powrie successfully applying for bail in Batemans Bay Local Court yesterday afternoon from Nowra’s South Coast Correctional Centre despite objections from the DPP.

He’s been ordered to pay a $10,000 cash surety, hand in his passport and report to police daily.

He’ll return to court on July 27.
