A local medical diagnostic service provider at Merimbula has defended the care they provided to a Pambula Beach woman, who was given a different scan to what her GP had requested and died several weeks later from undiagnosed uterine cancer.
We reported on Friday, the first anniversary of 56-year-old Simone Crerar’s death, that her family are still seeking answers about how this was allowed to occur and what changes have been made as a result of the bungle.
Staff at the centre provided Simone with an ultrasound of her abdomen despite her doctor referring her for a scan on her pelvic area where she had a large mass growing.

In a two sentence response to our questions, a spokesperson for South East Radiology quoted the NSW Health Care Complaints Commission (HCCC) review.
“We are committed to providing the highest standards of care and cooperated fully with the HCCC’s review of the various health providers involved in Ms Crerar’s care, who found that “There is no evidence that the radiology service failed to identify a significant abnormality or that there was any delay or deficiency in reporting or communication of the findings,” the statement said.
This is the same investigation Simone’s family has requested be formally reviewed.
“We would like to extend our sympathies to Simone Crerar’s family.”
The wrong test was performed shortly after Simone was misdiagnosed with fibroids at South East Regional Hospital in Bega.
