PlayStation’s latest State of Play broadcast has wrapped, and it did not skimp on the heavy hitters. From surprising mythology pivots to long-awaited superhero gameplay, the showcase gave us a proper look at where our consoles will be taking us through the rest of 2026 and into 2027.
Whether you are a fan of brutal hack-and-slash adventures, tense choices in the dark, or just fancy hunting some dragons with your mates, there was plenty to digest. Let us dive into the biggest reveals that will be dominating your download queues.
The Big Reveals: God of War Forges a New Path
The absolute mic-drop moment of the showcase belonged to Santa Monica Studio. Rumours had been swirling, but we finally have confirmation on the next mainline entry in one of PlayStation’s most sacred franchises: God of War Laufey.
"Death was supposed to be the end, but for Laufey (Faye), warrior and wife to Kratos, a new adventure is just beginning."
Instead of following Kratos or Atreus, the story shifts entirely to Faye. After her funeral, she awakens unexpectedly in the Everywhen, an afterlife where ruthless deities from various global mythologies are locked in a vicious power struggle. To protect the family she left behind, Faye must weaponise her own formidable magic and fighting prowess to navigate this dangerous new realm.
Mechanically, the 20-minute gameplay showcase made one thing abundantly clear: Faye does not play second fiddle to her famous husband. The game retains the intimate, over-the-shoulder perspective and brutal combat precision the series is famous for, but swaps Kratos’s raw, heavy anger for a more fluid, magical agility. It looks beautiful, fast, and intensely narrative-driven.
If you like: God of War Ragnarök and Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, this mythological afterlife adventure is going to be right up your alley.
Slicing Through the Competition: Marvel’s Wolverine
Insomniac Games finally gave us a proper look at Marvel’s Wolverine, and it is safe to say they are embracing the character’s inherently violent nature. This is an unapologetically brutal, single-player action game that does not skimp on blood or severed cybernetics.
The story follows Logan as he tracks the Reavers, a cybernetic mercenary militia hunting down mutants for the fanatical billionaire industrialist Bolivar Trask. Along the way, Logan crosses paths with Jean Grey, who is stepping into a leadership role for the captured mutants.
Mechanically, the gameplay cuts significantly deeper than simple button-mashing claw strikes. Players will manage a tactical suite of upgrades, unlocking new cosmetic suits—like the classic brown comic book gear—and unique claw variants that change up your approach. The combat mechanics appear heavy and impactful, capturing the untamed momentum of Logan in a fight.
If you like: Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and the Batman: Arkham series, but wish they had a significantly higher gore rating, this is your next obsession.
Surviving the Night (Again) and Villainous Showdowns
For the horror enthusiasts, Firesprite Games revealed Until Dawn 2, arriving in 2027. Moving away from the original cast, the sequel focuses on a crew of internet ghost hunters from a channel called Dead True. The twist? Their online scares have always been completely faked, but they suddenly find themselves trapped in a genuine supernatural nightmare where your choices dictate who survives until morning.
Meanwhile, fighting game fans got a look at MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls. Developed by Arc System Works, the game revealed its fourth faction: the Knights of Doom. Led by Doctor Doom, the roster expands to include Magneto, Green Goblin, and Carnage, with their uneasy alliance explored in a dedicated narrative Episode Mode.
Finally, if you want something to play immediately, Marathon Season 2 went live during the broadcast. Bungie is hosting an Open Play Week from June 3 to June 10, allowing anyone to jump into its high-stakes extraction shooter gameplay without needing a PlayStation Plus subscription.
Is the Hype Real?
There is no denying that this State of Play has set a high bar for the coming years. With Marvel’s Wolverine locked in for a 15 September 2026 release and MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls landing on 7 August 2026, the latter half of this year is incredibly stacked. While Until Dawn 2 is a bit further out in 2027 and God of War Laufey is currently sitting without a firm date, both are already highly anticipated blockbusters that justify owning a PlayStation 5.
