The town of Merimbula is in mourning, after the sudden passing of local resident Christopher Nicholls over the weekend.

Chris is best known in his role as Manager of the Merimbula Visitor Information Centre as well as his work as a member of Merimbula’s Rural Fire Brigade where he was awarded the National Emergency Medal and Premiers Bushfire Emergency Citation for his contribution to the 2019/20 Bushfire Emergency.

President of the Merimbula Chamber of Commerce, Nigel Ayling, said Chris has always been a strong advocate for the area.

“I’ve known Chris for a number of years since he moved down here about 12 years ago and he’s been that integral part of the community and apart from that relationship as a colleague, he was also a very good friend and he’ll be sorely missed,” Mr Ayling said.

“He definitely played a major part in the community, promoting Merimbula and supporting the businesses and also he’s been a great support to Merimbula Chamber,” he said.

“With the work he’s contributed over many years, it will leave a large hole in the community.

“His family are coming to the area soon to be part of any commemoration service and obviously our thoughts are with his family and friends.

“Hopefully we will pull together as a community and remember him and his great work.”

It is too early yet to confirm any service details but there will likely be a service for Chris held next week.

Our thoughts go out to Chris’ family and friends.
