A woman charged with 14 offences including assaulting police at Batemans Bay Hospital burst into tears after being sentenced to one year in jail.

Melissa Mae has been in custody since February after a warrant was issued for her arrest after she failed to appear in court several times.

Her lawyer Adam Rand told Batemans Bay Local Court…his client has been assaulted while behind bars because of her small frame and argued her offences were on the local end of the scale.

“She is horrified at throwing water at police because she respects police,” he said.

After several minutes of silence while Judge Doug Dick filled in court papers he told her it took him all that time because all this paperwork relates to you, holding it all up.

He told Mae while he accepts that she has PTSD and cognitive issues he can’t allow someone to keep committing crimes especially violent offences.

The sentence has been backdated to seven weeks to when she was arrested and will be eligable for parole after serving 3 months.
