The 16 Days of Activism campaign against violence toward women is continuing along the Far South Coast with new data highlighting the scale of domestic violence.

The Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research reports between July 2024 and June this year there were 218 domestic assaults reported in the Eurobodalla and 106 in the Bega Valley.

On this International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to primary prevention – to stop the violence before it starts in our communities.

Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence Jodie Harrison said the government has passed new laws to strengthen protections against image-based abuse by outlawing the creation of sexually explicit deepfakes, modernised the definition of stalking to more clearly cover technology facilitated tracking and monitoring conduct and criminalised coercive control.

“We have also invested $38 million into rolling out our first primary prevention strategy – to stop violence at the start,” Ms Harrison said.

“We stand with all victim-survivors and their families, and acknowledge their strength, courage and resilience,” she said.

“We mourn those who have lost their lives to gendered violence. Each one of them a mother, sister, daughter, aunt and friend.”
