The official bushfire season is now underway along the Far South Coast.

The Bushfire Danger Period came into effect at midnight.

While conditions are currently more on the wet side of things RFS Acting Manager for our region, Chris Anderson said it won’t take much for that to change.

“It’s probably not as dry as it generally is at this time of year mow but this wind we’ve been experiencing over the past week certainly has dried things out,” he said.

“We’re seeing a lot of the bush areas along the Far South Coast still fairly wet at the moment but we do have some grassland curing throughout the district. Certainly in the Bega Valley we’ve got a lot of lovegrass and it’s started to cure off over the last few months.”

The start of the fire season means a permit is now required to ignite a fire outdoors until the end of March.

The application process is now all done online through the NSW RFS website.
