A quick thinking driver has avoided disaster after a fire ignited on his garbage truck in North Bega yesterday.
The load within the Cleanaway truck erupted in flames while carrying out the usual kerbside pick ups.
The driver quickly dumped the contents out at the corner of Parrabel Street and Angledale Road and called the firies.
At this stage the cause is being put down to a battery that had been thrown in the rubbish mixed with aerosol cans.
Bega Valley Shire Council is pleading with residents not to throw out batteries in general rubbish bins.
The council’s Waste Strategy Coordinator, Tim Cook said the incident is a reminder that batteries must never be placed in any Council bin.
They can be disposed of for free at the Community Recycling Centre at Merimbula or via the mobile version that visits a different waste and recycling facility each month.
