Almost 3000 years of RFS service recognised

Rural Fire Service volunteers have been recognised for more than 2800 years of service here on the Far South Coast.

73 National Medals and 67 Long Service Medals and clasps presented in special ceremonies at Bega and Narooma on the weekend.

Among those honoured was Nambugga Brigade’s Patrick Bateman who received his National Medal fifth clasp for 74 years of service.

RFS Assistant Commissioner Leigh Pilkington said Pat served in senior leadership roles including Captain. Deputy Captain and Vice President for more than two thirds of those seven decades.

“Patrick’s contribution to his brigade and community cannot be overstated,” Assistant Commissioner Pilkington said.

“He has guided members through countless fire seasons and inspired generations of volunteers with his experience and steadfast commitment.”

Also honoured was Judee Bryant who has been part of the Service for 43 years.

“As a vital member of the Durras South Brigade and Far South Coast District, Judee is known for her leadership, professionalism and mentorship. After leading the brigade as Captain for 24 years, she has left a lasting legacy,” Assistant Commissioner Pilkington said.

“Judee, like the other being recognised exemplifies the values of the RFS and are exceptional people not only in the Service, but also in their communities.”
