A man accused of attempting to hold up a Bega bank branch yesterday has been remanded in custody after a brief court mention this morning.

38-year-old Matthew John Scott is charged with aggravated robbery, deprive person of liberty and hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty.

Police were called to the Commonwealth Bank branch on Carp Street around 3.10pm yesterday (Friday 9 October 2026), following reports of a man inside the building armed with a knife.

“When officers entered the bank, the man allegedly held a knife to the throat of a 58-year-old female staff member and a number of threats were made,” South Coast Police District Crime Manager, Detective Inspector Justin Marks said.

“After a brief verbal interaction between the man and police, officers deployed a Taser to affect the man’s arrest,” he said.

Today Legal Aid lawyer Palistha Chitraker told the Bail Review Court Scott was not seeking bail.

“Your Honour there is no application for release in this matter. Mr Scott does not wish to appear on screen either,” Ms Chitraker said.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Marc Turner confirmed one of the charges had already been referred to the DPP for an election to prosecute.

The bank branch is expected to reopen on Monday morning as usual at this stage.
