A million-dollar upgrade to the Cobargo Rural Fire Service Brigade Station has been officially unveiled.

The town’s volunteer members gathered at the facility on Saturday to celebrate the occasion after the devastating fires five and a half years ago.

The upgrade includes new amenities, kitchen, meeting rooms and training facilities.

RFS Assistant Commissioner Leigh Pilkington said the station’s history in the Bega Valley is not just confined to Black Saturday.

“The Tathra Fire, Yankees Gap Fire, the Coolagolite Fires. All through that at the Cobargo station they have a really strong membership of about 70 people,” he said.

“They’ve been protecting their own community and supporting others in the district for a long time.

“The completion of these station improvements is a major step forward for the brigade and the community it serves,” Assistant Commissioner Pilkington said.

“Our volunteers are on call 24/7 and they deserve facilities that support their training, safety and wellbeing.
