A boost to the housing supply in Bega.

Bega Valley Shire Council has approved a new subdivision of 166 residential blocks on East Street.

Mayor Russell Fitzpatrick said the plan, which covers the almost 20 hectare site including 1.8 hectares of public open space, is now at an acceptable stage after earlier attempts were knocked back.

“I’ve seen that first proposal back in 2022 and I was horrified of what was proposed. No community areas, no grass, green grass areas so well done to the staff working through it with the same developer,” Mayor Fitzpatrick said.

“Some developers probably would have walked away and said council don’t want to approve anything but at least the developer here has worked through the problem,” he said.

“Lots have been reduced by 32 lots overall. Some of those lots have been increased right up from 550 to 1.717 square metres.”

The mayor said more housing is vital to the region’s future, helping people put down roots, attracting workers and supporting local businesses.

“The only way we can make housing or land more affordable is to have more in the supply. I’ve always personally believed that and I think that’s the only way to do it and this actually puts the supply into bigger very quickly,” he said.

“We talk about 20 and 30 years time. This allows it and takes it out to the boundary road in the section now where most of our future residents is going to be.”
