A jury has been sworn in and given instructions by the judge for the trial of a man accused using a weapon to avoid being arrested by police.

Cameron Joel Thompson has told Bega District Court he is not guilty of the charge in connection to an alleged incident between Shellharbour and Kiama in July last year when he was 31.

Thompson, shackled in handcuffs and wearing a white business shirt and dark long pants, was led into the courtroom by corrective services officers yesterday.

Two of the first group of jurors were rejected by his barrister before settling on the 12-person panel.

The court has heard Thompson was allegedly weaving over the wrong side of the road then straightened and sped up as he attempted to run into two different police cars.

In her opening statement the DPP’s solicitor told Bega District Court, she will be arguing the actions of Thompson, from Batemans Bay, constituted turning the Mitsubishi ASX he was driving into an offensive weapon to avoid arrest.

The trial continues today with the first of several witnessed to be called to give evidence.
