Apple has rolled out its latest iPhone software update, and there’s one new security feature that could be particularly handy for Aussies trying to avoid scams.
Alongside the new iPhone 18 range, Apple has released iOS 27, bringing a stack of new features and improvements to iPhone users. But one of the more interesting additions is Impersonation Risk Detection, designed to help protect users from scams where someone is pretending to be a trusted person or organisation.
Your iPhone Can Now Spot Scam Risk
The feature is designed to identify situations where you could be at risk of an impersonation scam. These scams can involve someone pretending to be your bank, a government agency or even someone you know, before pressuring you into making a payment or changing important account details.
iOS 27 can provide supported apps with a risk level of Unknown, Medium or High, giving them another way to identify potentially suspicious activity. The app can then decide whether to show a warning, ask you to verify your identity or add a delay before allowing an action to continue.
There’s One Catch
The feature isn’t switched on automatically. To enable it, head to Settings > Privacy & Security > Impersonation Risk Detection, then turn on Share with App Developers.
It also only works with apps that support the feature, so it won’t detect every scam that lands on your phone. Still, as scammers become increasingly convincing, having your iPhone raise a red flag at the right moment could be a pretty handy extra layer of protection.
