Local chicken breeders are not sounding the alarm just yet despite confirmation of the Bird Flu here on the Far South Coast.
The State Government has stepped surveillance in the area after the positive test for a dead bird found on a Narooma beach.
Matt Bonomy from Bega and District Poultry Club said members are just being more vigilant with their biosecurity measures now.
“We’re just on high alert biosecurity like wear different boots in your chook yard and and leave them on your place. Don’t wear them downtown or anything like that,” Mr Bonomy said.
“Washing hands, try and limit the people coming into your yard. Limit the wild birds, try and keep the wild birds out as much as you can,” he said.
The Club has been liaising with the government vets to stay up to date on the situation.
“I’ve been on the phone today to the vet. He was very helpful. Make sure that you’re very, very stringent with your bio security and just keep on top of things,” Mr Bonomy aid.
“If you see a sicki bird or you’ve got something strange happening with your birds give the 1800 number a ring and report what’s happening, even if it’s not in your yard and if you see something, somewhere down at the beach or whatever,” he said.
