If you thought Woody saying goodbye to the gang in 2019 was the final “so long, partner”, think again. Disney and Pixar have just dropped the first official trailer and poster for Toy Story 5, and it seems the toys are facing a threat much more terrifying than a backyard furnace or a creepy antique shop.

The enemy? A screen.

In a move that feels incredibly relatable for every parent (and person) currently glued to their phone, our favourite toys are coming face-to-face with Lilypad, a high-tech tablet device voiced by Greta Lee. According to the latest sneak peek, Lilypad isn’t just a new addition to Bonnie’s room; she is a “disruptive” influence with some very modern ideas about what an eight-year-old child actually needs. Hint: It involves fewer pull-strings and more pixels.

The biggest talking point from the trailer is undoubtedly the return of Woody. After he chose the life of a “lost toy” alongside Bo Peep at the end of the fourth film, many wondered how Pixar would bridge the gap. It appears the digital takeover is so dire that Jessie has to call in the big guns.

Seeing Woody and Buzz Lightyear back together is always a nostalgic win, but this time around, the stakes feel a bit more personal. It’s no longer just about being outgrown; it’s about being replaced by an algorithm.

While the core trio of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and Joan Cusack are back in the saddle, the voice cast is expanding in some very fun directions:

  • Craig Robinson joins as Atlas, a cheerful talking GPS hippo (because every road trip needs a hippo’s guidance).
  • Shelby Rabara plays Snappy, an excitable camera toy.
  • Conan O’Brien is jumping into the toy box as Smarty Pants.
  • Ernie Hudson takes over the mantle of Combat Carl, previously voiced by the late, great Carl Weathers.

We’re also getting a look at life with Bonnie (now voiced by Scarlett Spears) and her new friend Blaze (Mykal-Michelle Harris), who apparently shares Bonnie’s love for animals.
