Down South Jazz Club Presents: The Senator’s Swinging Six
On 19th March at Club Sapphire the Down South Jazz Club is proud to be able to present what promises to be a truly exceptional night of jazz with “The Senator’s Swinging Six”, led by trombonist and singing entertainer extraordinaire Simon Bartlett, He will be supported by Paul Dion on keys and reeds, Tim Benson on trumpet, Saul Richardson on guitar, Mike Walsh on bass and David Hewitt on drums.
As a young man, Simon Bartlett originally wanted to be an astronomer, but the prospect of working nights and travelling to remote centres made him turn to music – if only he’d known what that career path would lead to!
After completing his studies at The Sydney Conservatorium, Simon spent some time in Orange working at the Orange Music Centre. He played in local jazz bands during that time before deciding to return to Sydney to further his studies in jazz. He was a member of Australia’s leading Reggae band – Calabash, .after which he created the entertainment company Hi Life Entertainment, providing entertainment for both the Sydney Olympics and The Rugby World Cup. During this time he played and sang with John Morrison’s Swing City, and wrote the words and music for the Musical “Jump Sugar Jump”, which had its premier season in Chelsea. Simon joined the Royal Australian Navy Band as a trombone player, quickly finding his way to the front of the bandstand as a soloist and singer He is now the Royal Australian Navy Band’s Musical Director.
Paul Dion, Mike Walsh and David Hewitt played for the Down South Jazz Club last month with Bev ‘Banjo’ and Co, which was an excellent night and the three complemented the band very well.
This special and very enjoyable night of jazz will cost $20 for jazz club members and $25 for visitors, with music commencing at 7.30 pm. Bookings can be made by sending an email to [email protected]. You can also call Pam or George Pitt on 0479 065 590, or just turn up on the night and pay at the door.
