A local student has told Eurobodalla Shire Council the closure of the northern end of Congo Road is a big safety issue for young people.

Ada Harris addressed councillors on the issue during a public participation session.

The road is shut at the northern with a private property currently blocking the road from joining up on the other side.

This creates a 6km diversion via the Princes Highway to get from one side of the town to the other.

The 18-year-old youth rep on the Congo Community Association says she doesn’t know why the council can’t just sort out the long running problem.

“Learning to drive in our region is already a challenge. The closure of Congo Road forces us to merge, after a full stop, onto the Princess Highway, an 80km section of fast traffic,” she said.

“For new drivers like myself, and soon my younger brother, this is intimidating, stressful and unnecessarily risky. Especially knowing someone my age has actually lost their life at this intersection.

Eurobodalla Shire Mayor Matt Hatcher said negotiations between the parties are continuing.
