Elderly man behind bars over pokies hit

An elderly Sydney man injured after he allegedly hit a woman playing the pokies at a pub has been refused bail.

George Richard McDonald faced Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday via video link with his head wrapped in a bandage and blood on his shirt.

The court was told the Waterloo man was on a good behaviour bond for a domestic-violence related assault when he approached the same victim and hit her on the side of her head at the Woolpack Hotel in Redfern on Friday.

She allegedly kicked him back, causing him to fall and injure his head, which required stitches.

McDonald had a series of criminal convictions going back a decade related to the same woman, the court was told.

Magistrate Estelle Hawdon said she was concerned McDonald would breach an order or bail conditions and commit a serious offence, and therefore put the community in danger.

"Matters of domestic violence are regarded as serious in this court," she said.

"I really have grave concerns of him being able to abide by the conditions."

He is expected to face Central Local Court on Tuesday.
