In came in through our open windows and on the hot westerlies that blew strongly overnight, and this morning it was on our doors, houses and cars.

Asthmatics and people with respiratory illnesses are being warned to take care as the dust particles may not settle until later today.

The dust storm wasn't just over the Far South Coast, the BOM says it was widespread coming from inland to the east coast.

Meanwhile a severe weather warning for damaging winds remains in place for parts of the South Coast. Wind gusts are meant to get stronger over the day.

Senior meteorologist Gabrielle Woodhouse says the dust storm has been widespread.
