Police have asked South Coast drivers to take extra care today with heavy rain in the Bega Valley and Eurobodalla  forecast.

There's a severe weather alert for the Shoalhaven, Illawarra and Sydney metropolitan area.

At this stage there's no flood watch for the Bega Valley or Eurobodalla, however drivers travelling further north are asked to be careful with flash flooding possible.

The Bureau says  coastal catchments between the Central Coast and St Georges Basin in the Shoalhaven may see widespread localised flooding.

A Bureau spokesman says the Eurobodalla, which is on the edge of the low, could get up to 50 mill of rain today, meanwhile about 30 mill of rain has already fallen in parts of the Bega Valley Shire overnight, with at least another 20 mill expected today, as well as possible storms.
