Essential Energy is hoping to have power restored to parts of Eden by 11.30am after a large tree fell on high voltage power lines.

The SES is on alert as the severe weather hits the South Coast.

The Bureau says a low pressure system is bringing strong northwest to southwest winds today, with peak gusts in excess of 90 kilometres an hour possible this morning over the South Coast and Illawarra.

Winds are expected to ease by Saturday morning as the low moves further away.

Yesterday afternoon the wind brought down trees in the Batemans Bay area with SES crews responding.

Rod Gould from the Bega SES says if possible avoid parking under trees and secure items such as trampolines around the yard. He says winds are expected to get even stronger over the next few hours.

The number for the SES is 132 500.
