A public memorial service for former South Coast police officer, Mick Horne, will be held at 11am, at the Bega Valley Civic Centre, this Saturday.
54-year-old Mr Horne, died in hospital on Sunday, the 3rd of June, after being attacked on Sapphire Coast Drive near his home at Tura Beach on the afternoon of Friday, the 1st of June. A 20-year-old man is in custody, charged with two counts of murder and one count of grevious bodily harm with intent to kill.
As well as charged with fatally injuring Mick Horne, the man also stands accused of murdering his grandmother, 69-year-old Gail Winner, and critically wounding his grandfather Thomas, in a knife attack in Bega. 71-year-old Mr Winner remains in a serious condition at Canberra Hospital.
Mick Horne was a much-loved member of the Far South Coast community. A former senior constable with the Bega Highway Patrol, and keen fisherman, he is survived by his wife Mel and their son Tom.
