Horse owners on the Far South Coast are being encouraged to vaccinate their animals against the Hendra virus.

NSW Department of Primary Industries says an unvaccinated horse had to be euthanased at a property near Lismore recently, after samples from the horse tested positive to the virus.

The disease can cause a range of symptoms in horses, with the most common being a sudden fever and either respiratory or neurological illness.

If your horse becomes unwell, people and other animals should stay away and owners are advised to call a veterinarian or the Animal Biosecurity Emergency Hotline on 1800 675 888 immediately.
