Teen charged over Moruya crash

A teenager has been charged over a serious crash at Moruya last year.

Just before 10pm on Tuesday, August 10, a Holden Commodore was allegedly stolen from an address on Vulcan Street, Moruya.

Officers attached to South Coast Police District attempted to stop the vehicle a short time after observing it being driven in a dangerous manner, but the driver allegedly failed to stop and drove from the scene.

Officers patrolled the area before attending a single-vehicle crash in Murray Street, Moruya.

The driver – a man aged 18 at the time – and his 14-year-old passenger were removed from the vehicle by members of the public and treated by paramedics.

The younger boy suffered a fractured femur and was taken to Moruya Hospital before being airlifted to hospital in Canberra for further treatment.

The older man was arrested and taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

The vehicle was seized and underwent further examination.

Specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision, leading to the arrest on Wednesday of a 19-year-old man.

He was taken to Batemans Bay Police Station where he was charged with 10 offences including aggravated break and enter to commit a serious indictable offence; stealing a motor vehicle; dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm; mid-range drink driving and driving with a suspended licence.

He was granted conditional bail to appear in Moruya Local Court on Friday, January 14.
