The Sapphire Coast Turf Club is hosting a seven race card today (Thursday October 28) with gates opening at 1pm and up to 3000 double vaccinated patrons allowed in.
While the club is looking forward to today's TAB race meeting, it's next Tuesday the club are excited about.
As well as hosting a race day on Melbourne Cup Day, the Sapphire Coast Turf Club are in the running to win a large donation for a South Coast charity.
Sapphire Turf Club CEO, Rob Tweedy, said because the club was selected as a Melbourne Cup tour destination this year (even though the Cup only ended up virtually touring our region due to COVID-19 restrcitions), it along with 23 other clubs across the country are in the running to win big for a good cause.
"It's basically like a sweep, so you get a barrier drawn out and if the horse that starts out that barrier wins to the Melbourne Cup, one of those 24 selected gets a $50,000 bonus which is donated to a local charity," Mr Tweedy said.
"We selected the Social Justice Advocates in the Bega Valley that do a fantastic job," he continued.
"So if the horse coming out of barrier 14 wins the Melbourne Cup, we get $50,000 to donate to that charity which would be fantastic to see that money injected into such a great cause."
Even those not interested in the Melbourne Cup, can cheer home the horse in barrier 14 in what would be a win for the South Coast.
The Melbourne Cup Barrier Draw will take place on Saturday October 30 at Flemington Racecourse just after the running of the Victoria Derby Day races in Melbourne.
The first race at the Sapphire Coast today is set to jump at 1:40pm today on a Soft 5 track that will likely be upgraded to a Good with the mercury to hit 28 degrees in Kalaru.
While on Tuesday (November 2), attendees can bring their own picnics, but no BYO alcohol.
Free buses will be running to the club from Eden, Pambula, Merimbula, Tura Beach, Tathra, and Bega.
Times and locations for the pick-up and drop-offs will be on the Sapphire Coast Turf Club website.
