Love, Jealousy and Mortality – Performances of Shakespeare’s Sonnets @ Tura Marrang Library
Shakespeare’s Sonnets are one of the great works of English literature and among the greatest love poetry in any language. The 154 sonnets are a vivid dramatic works by one of history’s greatest playwrights and poet.
‘The poet’, the speaker of the sonnets, is a complex and troubled individual, in love platonically (but passionately) with a younger man and erotically with a ‘dark lady’, and jealous of rival poets. He explores this tangle of passions and fears in some of the most beautiful poetry ever written, full of quirky humor and flights of fancy.
Dr Kai Jensen will perform Shakespeare’s sonnets from memory across a series of four performances. He will intersperse the performance with brief discussions, to introduce the audience to the themes of the next set of sonnets and prepare them to understand unfamiliar Elizabethan English words and concepts.
Feel free to enjoy the performance and then stay for the morning tea and discussion 🙂
