A warning has been issued about the increasing incidences of human encounters of deadly snakes here on the Far South Coast.

Expert handlers from the VRA Narooma Squad have been kept on their ‘safely protected toes’ with pleas for urgent help with the reptiles.

One of them is Captain Malcolm Barry, who said tiger snakes have been the most common.

“Over the last couple of weeks we’ve been quite busy,” Captain Barry said.

“We’ve done four Tiger snakes, a brown and a red-bellied black snake just in the last two weeks, which is higher than normal for Tiger snakes that’s for sure.”

They’re coming in various sizes from small babies to big adults.

“There’s a lot of young ones. I picked up a tiger and brown that were only a foot long,” he said.

“The two tigers I got out of the car at Narooma and one at Bodalla they were quite big, about five foot long.”

The VRA is gladly accepting financial donations to get more of their volunteers trained up as snake handlers.
