A man has been sentenced to 12 months in jail after pleading guilty to stealing a tradies work ute with $18,000 worth of tools in it.

29-year-old Steven McCarron told Batemans Bay Local Court he took the Isuzu D-Max from Dolphins Beach Caravan Park in June last year so he could get home.

The court heard he initially blamed his 17-year-old cousin who was with him at time.

Magistrate Michael Love told McCarron “It’s a disgrace that someone can park their car full of their work gear and have it stolen. It’s totally unacceptable.”

The drug addict is already serving 14 months in jail for other offences.

He told the magistrate he wants to try to get off the stuff and find a way to get back into his son’s life.

Magistrate Love told the 29-year-old he’s no different to most others with drug and ADHD issues and was throwing his life away.

McCarron will be eligible for release in November after a 6-month non-parole period was backdated to May.
