Far South Coast primary producers have questioned the wisdom of moves to start allowing US beef imports into Australia.
The Federal Government will lift the long running ban as part of trade negotiations with the Trump Administration.
Bega Beef Co-Op Chair Neil Waterford said the risk from the overseas meat is not worth taking.
“It possibly isn’t a high risk but the ramifications of foot and mouth or even lumpy skin, I know in France at the moment their has been an outbreak of lumpy skin,” he said.
“I don’t need to tell you or your listeners out there that if foot and mouth got into the country we would be A over z very quickly.”
The US announced a ten percent trade tariff on all imports from Australia.
