A Bega Valley athlete is in final preparations to run from Perth to Pambula to raise money and awareness for autism and mental health.

After 14 years of training, Dane Waites will start his long journey home on Sunday, hoping to collect $500,000 in donations along the way.

In preparation for his marathon run, Dane has been running 50 kilometres a day and will cover 4,000 kilometres before his arrival at the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club on September 30.

Hear Dane's thank you to the local community below:

Junee Waites, Dane's mother says he came up with the idea during a radio interview after winning a bronze medal in the marathon at the 2003 World Summer Games in Ireland.
